Incinerator Planning Appeal Commences

An Bord Pleanála has opened an oral hearing into plans for a €150m twin incinerator at Cork habour.

The proposal for the Ringaskiddy were brought forward by Indaver Ireland.

Around 284 objections have been lodged against the planned facility, including submissions from Cork City and County Councils and the Department of Environment.

Indaver made its planning application for the hazardous industrial waste incinerator and municipal waste incinerator, each capable of taking 100,000 tonnes per annum, under the Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Act 2006.

Proposals were first submitted over eight years ago, and were later passed by An Bord Pleanála, against the advice of its inspector, in early 2004.

The appeals body has now decided to hold another oral hearing, expected to last a fortnight.

The hearing is being held at Cork International Airport Hotel.
