Clare TD Tony Killeen yesterday confirmed grant aid has been approved for capital projects at three primary schools in the county.

The Building Unit of the Department of Education told Mr Killeen, who has made numerous representations on behalf of the schools concerned, that grant aid has been sanctioned for the works at Querrin NS, Kilkee; Doolin Mixed N.S., Doolin; and St. Conaire's N.S., Tullyvarraga, Shannon.

Outlining the nature of the proposed works, Mr Killeen said: "Querrin NS will benefit from Sewerage, Electrics and Access works; Doolin Mixed N.S. has received funding for the development of car parking facilities; and grant aid has been allocated to St. Conaire's N.S. for the purpose of undertaking playground improvement works and developing toilet facilities."

He said: "The Building Unit will be in contact with the school authorities shortly in relation to the amount funding approved."

He described the funding for these projects as "very positive news", as some had believed that the current economic downturn would have led to a subsequent decrease in Government spending in this area.

Earlier this year, the department announced funding allocations to Inagh, Carron, Carrigaholt, Furglan, Clooney, Ballycar, Cree, Quilty and Ruan National Schools, as well as Ennis Community College.
