Grass verges along the N4 at Palmerstown will be cut by South Dublin County Council, following wrangling among councillors.
Fine Gael councillor for Lucan and Palmerstown, William Lavelle, said: "In response to representations from the Palmerstown Environmental Group, I have tabled a priority question for my first council meeting on the issue of grass cutting along the median and verges of the N4 at Palmerstown.
"However, in response to my question, I have now been advised that the long-awaited grass cutting is now due to take place this week."
He said: "The grass has been allowed grow extremely long and wild along the length of the N4 through Palmerstown. This has been of great concern and had caused some embarrassment for the local community especially as the Dublin City Council stretch of the N4 has been immaculately maintained.
"Bizarrely it seems that the lack of heath and safety training for council staff is the reason for the recent absence of grass cutting. I will be keeping pressure on council management to address this matter urgently."
The council said: "In the case of dual carriageways and major roads additional specialized training is needed to comply with Health and Safety requirements and trainers are being sought at present to provide this training.
"Limited work has now commenced on the verges and medians of the major public roads and it is expected this work will be completed by the end of this week."
