Job losses at two firms in Portlaoise has been described as a "hammer blow" for the region by one local TD.

Fine Gael's Olwyn Enright expressed her sympathy at the news both Banagher Concrete and Morrison Utility Services in the town would be making cutbacks.

It is believed over 60 jobs in total are being axed.

"This is the worst time possible for anyone to be out of work, with unemployment at record levels and the economy in the deepest recession in living memory," said Ms Enright.

"Fifty jobs are going at Banagher Concrete, the largest employer in south and west Offaly and a vital contributor to the local economy.

"This will have a very serious impact on the area, as the company is locally-owned and managed and has a largely local workforce."

Ms Enright said the firm is yet another victim of the downturn in the construction industry.

"Although a significant number of jobs will remain at the facility, everything needs to be done to guarantee its long-term future," she said.

"Further 16 jobs are being lost in Portlaoise at Morrison Utility Services, following the loss of a contract with Eircom."

The TD said it is vital that all State agencies offer their services for retraining and up-skilling all those losing their jobs.
