The Northern Ireland Housing Executive has sanctioned works to revamp 56 homes in the Waterside area of Derry.
Kitchens in various locations such as Drumgesh, Esker and Farlow are being updated and brought up to current day standards at a cost of £250,000.
Avril McAllister, Housing Executive District Manager for the Waterside, said the scheme is good news for tenants.
"Investment in this type of work helps to make a difference to the lives of our tenants," she said.
"During the scheme these tenants are having brand new modern kitchens fitted and they can select their kitchen units and worktops from a range of finishes. Electrical and plumbing installations are being upgraded.
"This will ensure that there are dedicated sockets for washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers. Electrically wired smoke alarms and heat detectors are also being installed in those homes which currently do not have this facility."
Vivienne Carlin, one of the first tenants to have her new kitchen revamped, said she is happy with the work and time taken.
"The finished product is even better than I expected," said Ms Carlin.
Egan contractor, PK Murphy Construction Ltd, was awarded the contract to install the new kitchens, and will be consulting with tenants on the details of the scheme.
Seana Hippsley, Customer Service Manager with PK Murphy, is impressed with the co-operation that she has received from the tenants in this area.
"PK Murphy is committed to achieving high quality and 100% satisfaction from all residents. We have further developed our customer care strategies, quality and delivery of work and by striving for zero defects we are providing residents with a kitchen that they can be proud of," she said.
"This scheme is progressing brilliantly and feedback from residents and the Housing Executive has been very positive."
