A football pitch that is currently being redeveloped is under investigation in Co Donegal – after human remains were discovered at the site.

Gardaí have confirmed that human skeletal remains, including a skull, have been found in sand that had been delivered at the training pitch at the Naomh Bríd GAA Club in Ballintra, RTÉ reports.

The sand was transferred from a quarry in the Gweedore area of the county and investigations are underway at both this location and the GAA pitch.

A local coroner has been notified, although gardaí say it is too early to determine where the remains originated, or how old they are.
