Queen's Quay Regeneration Plan Launched

Belfast's riverside is in for a major boost with news that a regeneration master plan for the Queen's Quay site on the east bank of the River Lagan in Belfast has been commissioned.

The NI Social Development Minister Alex Attwood was at Queen's Quay - which stretches from the Odyssey to the Bridge End area of Belfast - and said he is seeking to develop this prime site, much of it unused ground, by opening up its investment potential.

"This area is full of potential and this master plan will bring out that potential. It will help link the east bank of river to the city centre.

"There is the prospect of a new foot and cycle bridge to provide improved access to future jobs and leisure opportunities at Queen's Quay, Odyssey and Titanic Quarter for people travelling from the north and west of the city.

"The master plan will shape the future of Queen's Quay and, in the longer term, be the catalyst for development from the waterfront back to the Lower Newtownards road, reconnecting inner east Belfast with the waterfront and city centre," he said.

"We must maintain Belfast's competitive position alongside other European cities by planning for the future growth during this difficult time of economic recovery.

"My Department will consult with all key stakeholders and community representatives in the area to take on board their views as we plan a bright future for Queen's Quay," he said noting that there has been considerable development on adjacent sites at Donegall Quay and Titanic Quarter and new development plans for Sirocco Quays, Belfast Quays, Odyssey and the East Belfast Shatter Zone.

The Minister indicated that, in view of these developments, a master plan would better inform decisions about the regeneration of the east bank of the Lagan by taking account of other developments in the area since 2005.

Jonas Deloitte will lead a regeneration team comprised of Benoy architects and Peter Brett LLP to prepare the master plan. The total cost of this assignment is £120,000 while the Department for Social Development will establish a stakeholder advisory group to advise the Department on the development of the master plan.
