Energy Minister, Arlene Foster has announced the beginning of a 12 week consultation on new energy legislation.
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment proposes to ask the Northern Ireland Assembly to make new primary legislation, to allow for greater powers for sustainable energy and additional regulatory measures relating to natural gas and electricity.
Commenting on the consultation, Arlene Foster said: "Energy efficiency can make a real difference to things that we all care about. Everyone wants a warm, healthy home and lower energy costs to help balance budgets. We also want to help make businesses more competitive and environmentally protect Northern Ireland for future generations."
As the Strategic Energy Framework sets out, energy efficiency is at the heart of the Executive’s approach to ensuring safe, secure and affordable energy supplies. Energy efficiency is often the quickest and most cost effective solution when compared with alternatives, saving on energy bills and reducing overall demand.
The Minister continued: "Energy savings have never been more important as we face so many energy challenges, particularly rising fuel costs. The proposals I am putting forward could create an ongoing programme of energy savings delivered on the ground in Northern Ireland."
The consultation also seeks views on a number of proposals for additional regulatory measures relating to natural gas and electricity.
