The pyrite remediation scheme has been extended after a small number of homes in south Dublin and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown were found to be affected by pyrite damage.
Olivia Mitchell, Fine Gael TD for Dublin South, welcomed the announcement and said there are no other practicable financial options available to homeowners whose homes contain pyrite.
She said: "The pyrite remediation scheme was set up to deal with the damage arising from the presence of significant levels of pyrite in the sub-floor hardcore, but its application was initially restricted to homes in Dublin City, Fingal, Kildare, Meath and Offaly.
"Last October, I asked the Minister for Environment, Alan Kelly, to amend the pyrite remediation scheme to include the Southside homes. This is a scheme of last resort.
"I welcome the extension of the scheme which I hope will offer the affected homeowners a reasonable and sustainable solution to this difficult problem which needless to say is a source of huge stress for them."
