Sinn Fein has raised concerns over the proposed housing development in Bettystown, Co Meath.

A total of 370 homes are expected to be built in the Cois na Mara area in Bettystown.

Leader Gerry Adams said residents living in the Northlands and Brabazon Bay have had to deal with numerous flooding incidents over recent years, and are worried that any further development will exacerbate the problem.

Mr Adams said: "I have written to Minister Kelly seeking his intervention on this issue. Legislation exists which enables the Minister to intervene in county development plans and local area plans and, if necessary, amend previous planning decisions.

"Planning permission for this huge development was first granted in 2008 during a time when many dubious planning decisions were made. In my view the proposed site is unsuitable for large scale development and should this building go ahead many more residents face the prospect of being affected by flood water.

"Northlands in Bettystown and other parts of East Meath have been included as part of the OPW's Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) studies since 2011."

Mr Adams is calling on the Minister to examine the issue.
