A new £860,000 funding scheme has been launched by the Department for Communities (DfC) to help conserve Northern Ireland's historic built heritage.

Applications are being invited to the Historic Environment Fund across four streams of Heritage Repair, Heritage Regeneration, Heritage Revival and Heritage Research.

Overall, the initiative is focused on conserving heritage assets and increasing knowledge and public awareness of the historic environment.

DfC Director of Historic Environment, Iain Greenway, said: "Our historic monuments and buildings are a key resource which, in addition to their heritage interest, are an important part of our surroundings; contribute to community pride; and help strengthen our economy, right across Northern Ireland, through tourism.

"Limited Funds are available to support the repair of scheduled monuments and listed buildings, the removal of vegetation from scheduled monuments and to encourage councils to develop maintenance initiatives. In addition funds are being invested in research and development projects and in encouraging activity in the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018."

The closing date for applications is 10 August.
