Road Safety Campaign Launched In NI

The PSNI have launched a major Road Safe initiative across all districts today, Thursday, 27 September.

Police will be focusing on road safe issues; seat belts, mobile phones, speeding, careless driving, tail gating etc.

Drivers have been warned that if they are caught committing any of the offences they can expect to get issued with a ticket "rather than the ticking off treatment today".

Ahead of the campaign the PSNI said: "There's too much carnage on our roads. Today we step up the reminder as to EVERYONE'S responsibility to stop it."

Welcoming the initiative, Sinn Féin's South Antrim MLA, Declan Kearney said: "I warmly welcome this important initiative by the PSNI to roll out a high profile road safety awareness campaign across all eleven policing districts on Thursday.

"I am especially pleased to note that there will be a particular concentration on road safety issues and awareness with local schools, including assembly presentations to primary school pupils.

"I want to commend the PSNI for this coordinated, high profile intervention towards road safety awareness. I have been campaigning consistently on rural road safety issues across South Antrim in recent years and that has been assisted through an excellent working partnership with the local PSNI, as well as Transport NI.

"This latest initiative across the north by the police will help to reinforce our local campaign work, and I hope also encourage similar road safety awareness partnerships to emerge elsewhere.

"Sadly we have witnessed yet more deaths on our roads during the course of recent days.

"It is essential that every opportunity is taken to raise road safety awareness to encourage responsible driving and ensure all our roads become safer for road users, both pedestrians and drivers alike."
