Green Party Councillor Donna Cooney has hit out at the decision to stop work on a €20 million cycle path from Fairview to Connolly Station in Dublin following disputes between Dublin City Council, the National Transport Authority (NTA) and Irish Water.
The route aims to connect the city centre with the Dublin Bay cycle path that runs along the coast from Clontarf to Sutton and has seen repeated delays since planning began 8 years ago.
"There can be no further delays to the Clontarf to City Centre Cycle-way and all agencies must cooperate on this urgently needed infrastructure," said Cllr Cooney. "This is the second busiest cycle route in the City and one of the most dangerous.
"This cycle-way design would be the best in Ireland and a model for others to follow, making huge improvements in the North city with planting and seating along the whole route from Clontarf to Amiens street. But we cannot spend €20 million on a project for the cycle-way to be dug up at a later stage by Irish water, or for the build to take longer and put cyclists safety in danger by sharing unprotected busy bus lanes."
