New Outdoor Scouts Space Opens In Fermanagh

Construction News Image
St Michael's Scout Group in Fermanagh has been boosted with the launch of a new outdoor space.

This project was developed as part of the PEACE IV Youth Focused Shared Spaces Programme and delivered through the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council's PEACE IV Partnership.

The programme, worth up to £500,000 has been significant in bringing young people together from different community backgrounds and building positive sustainable relationships within, and between, communities.

Speaking at the outdoor launch event, Chair, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Errol Thompson said: "Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is delighted to support this PEACE IV funded project. The investment has enabled St Michael's Scout Group to not only enhance their superb facilities for the benefit of their members but also to attract new users, thereby creating a more cohesive society through an increase in provision of shared spaces and services. The Council has long championed the benefits of working in partnership with key stakeholders and welcomes the development of shared spaces that enable initiatives that enhance the lives of our young people.

"Over the coming months, I look forward to attending further project launches and witnessing first-hand how PEACE IV funding has made a positive and lasting impact on our communities."

This programme is also one of 16 projects included in the Local Action Plan for the district being administered by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and funded under the EU’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). Match-funding for the Action Plan was provided by The Executive Office, Northern Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development, Ireland.

Speaking of behalf of St Michael's Scout Group, Ruairi Molloy added: "We are delighted with the investment received as a consequence of PEACE IV funding and welcomed the opportunity to work in partnership with the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council's PEACE IV Partnership to enhance our facilities through the development of new outdoor area. The development of this green area will allow the group to really improve its programme offering to all young people in the area and beyond.

"Covid-19 has been tough on all young people. Many scouts missed out because scouting activities are not easily carried out online. The new green area has arrived in perfect time to coincide with our registration drive in January. We envisage the outdoor area will allow young people, new and old, from all communities to join us, gain new skills and friendships but most importantly to have fun."
