The popularity of Higher-Level Apprenticeships (HLA) at South Eastern Regional College is continuing to rise with the latest cohort of graduates.

A total of 80 students have successfully completed their HLA in the past year, including Advanced Automotive Studies; Advanced Automotive Studies- Heavy Vehicle; Automotive Management; Construction and Construction – Building Services.

William Greer, Chief Training & Contracts Officer, SERC said: "The HLA is increasing in popularity, as the route to a third level qualification for people who wish to progress their studies through college and the workplace. Earning whilst you learn is one of the biggest attractions of the apprenticeship route."

Luke McBride (21) from Newtownabbey completed his HLA in Construction – Building Services at SERC's Bangor Campus. The young man who was employed by Vaughan Engineering, a leading mechanical and electrical building services engineering contractor operating throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, for the duration of his apprenticeship, is currently employed as a Project Engineer with the group.

Speaking about the HLA route, Luke commented: "I am delighted to have achieved my HLA. I really enjoyed the course and all the skills and experience gained throughout the apprenticeship.

"At times it was challenging working full time and studying two nights a week at SERC, but I had a very supportive employer who provided flexibility when approaching deadlines for course work, and I was able to benefit from the wealth of experience and knowledge about the industry from colleagues at work and the tutors at SERC. All areas of the course were relevant and aligned to what I am doing at work, which made the difference.

"Whist some of my peers are still at university, I am now employed as a Project Engineer and am working on sites all over Northern Ireland. I think if anyone is considering a career in engineering or construction, the apprenticeship route is the way to go."

In 2021/22, over 1,250 apprentices and 170 Higher Level Apprentices chose SERC to gain their Apprenticeship qualifications. The College works in partnership with 950 employers to offer apprenticeships in subjects ranging from Accountancy and Childcare to Fire and Security Systems as well as new apprenticeships including Glass and Glazing and Polymers to meet the demands of the local economy.

The Higher-Level Apprenticeships delivered by SERC offers qualifications at Level 4 and Level 5 and provides the opportunity to progress to Levels 6 and 7.
