Kilkenny County Council Secures Callan Flood Defences Funding

Construction News Image
Kilkenny County Council has received an additional allocation of funding from the Office of Public Works (OPW) for planned flood mitigation works in Callan, County Kilkenny. This latest grant, amounting to €27,245, pushes the total investment in these protective measures to €151,785 under the OPW’s Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.

The recently approved funds will facilitate a range of engineering interventions aimed at bolstering the town’s resilience against flooding. Key elements of the upcoming work include the procurement and fitting of a new pumping facility at the K-Cat carpark, alongside the decommissioning of the existing pump. Construction efforts will also encompass the installation of a 900mm overflow pipe and associated ancillary works.

Furthermore, the project extends to the provision of a new chamber at Bridge Street. Crucially, the scheme incorporates Individual Property Protection (IPP) measures for eight properties identified as vulnerable within the Callan area, providing direct safeguards against water ingress for these buildings.

This continued investment highlights a strategic focus on enhancing flood defences in targeted locations across the county, forming part of a wider national effort to protect communities and infrastructure from the impacts of severe weather events.
