Wicklow Gaol is currently closed to allow for essential building repairs and upgrades.
Wicklow County Council has commissioned a Conservation Management Plan to guide improvement works on the historic structure, prioritising the preservation of its fabric while addressing critical maintenance needs.
The planned works will focus on resolving leaks, carrying out structural repairs and undertaking external maintenance to ensure the building remains safe and accessible for future generations. Wicklow County Council is managing the project and overseeing the procurement of a new operator to maintain and enhance the site once works are complete.
These renovations form part of a broader plan to update exhibitions, introduce seasonal events, and improve facilities including food, drink, and retail offerings. The council also aims to make the Gaol more accessible to the local community for festivals and public events.
Wicklow County Council anticipates the Gaol will reopen within a few months, ready to welcome visitors for the summer tourist season. Emer O'Gorman, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, highlighted that this temporary closure allows the council to focus on the building’s long-term upkeep and maximise its potential as a key heritage asset.
Cathaoirleach Cllr. Melanie Corrigan thanked the local community and stakeholders for their patience and support during this period of improvement.
