McMenamin Engineering is playing a key role in Waterways Ireland’s new Craft Centre of Excellence in Tullamore, Co Offaly, having supplied and erected the project’s structural steel.
The scheme marks a significant investment in Ireland’s inland waterways heritage.
Situated about 1km east of Tullamore, the centre will replace the long-serving Tullamore Harbour depot, which has operated as a regional base for more than sixty years. When it opens in June 2026, up to 70 staff from Operations, Mechanical & Electrical, Finance and the Inspectorate will be brought together under one roof to enhance collaboration and innovation.
Working with main contractor Pat Loftus Construction, McMenamin Engineering is delivering the complete structural steel framework. The development includes carpentry and mechanical craft workshops, a modern administration building, yard areas, hardstanding and associated infrastructure, supporting employment and the preservation of traditional crafts in the region.
The relocation will also help unlock ambitious regeneration plans for Tullamore’s town-centre harbour area, illustrating how strategic infrastructure projects can benefit the wider community.
McMenamin Engineering is collaborating with Axis Architecture and Malachi Cullen Consulting Engineers Ltd to deliver the complex build. The completed facility is designed to meet the needs of a modern operational hub and will support Waterways Ireland’s role as custodians of over 1,100km of inland waterways and 650km of paths and cycleways.
