Uisce Éireann will this week start essential water mains replacement in Tuam, aimed at strengthening the security of supply and improving drinking water quality for households and businesses.
The scheme will see over 350 metres of ageing mains swapped for modern pipes along the R332 Dublin Road, from Rinkippeen to the Garraun Park Junction. The works form part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme and are expected to finish by Spring 2026.
Enda Mac Namara, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said customers in Tuam can look forward to a more secure and reliable water supply as a result of the project. "Aged water mains contribute significantly to water leakage and quality issues. The replacement of these water mains will improve the resilience of the network, eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean water lost into the ground," said Enda.
Enda Mac Namara added: "We would like to thank the local community for their support and patience in advance as we carry out these essential works."
Work areas will be confined to short sections to minimise disruption. Traffic management, including traffic lights, will be in place, but access for local and emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times. To minimise disruption over the Christmas period, construction will pause from Friday, 19 December until early January 2026.
Some nearby customers may experience brief interruptions to supply during the works. The project team will give at least 48 hours' notice ahead of any planned outage.
Farrans Construction will carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
