Major engineering works have resumed on the Waterford North Quays Development, focusing on the installation of critical flood prevention infrastructure.

The project, managed by contractors for Waterford City and County Council (WCCC), is designed to protect the rail line on the approach to Waterford, addressing long-standing flooding vulnerabilities and ensuring the network's climate resilience.

Beyond immediate flood mitigation for the existing terminus and the future Plunkett Station—scheduled for 2027—the works are a prerequisite for significant technical upgrades. These include the decommissioning of the current mechanical signalling system in favour of a modern electrical network, alongside the reinstatement of vital track capacity and routing options to and from Waterford.

The public transport components of the North Quays development are being delivered with funding from the Department of Transport via the National Transport Authority.

To facilitate these heavy engineering works, Iarnród Éireann has confirmed that off-peak service adjustments will be required between 08:00 and 14:30 on Mondays to Thursdays until 26 March 2026.
