Works are now in progress on Magazine Road, St Clares Avenue and Highfield West, where 750 metres of modern piping will be installed to reinforce the local network and reduce disruption for homes and businesses.
The existing mains have been vulnerable to bursts and leaks, causing interruptions to supply and wasting treated drinking water. The replacement programme is also expected to support ongoing improvements to water quality in the city.
Brian McCarthy of Uisce Éireann said the upgrades will deliver long-term benefits for customers. "Every pipe we replace is guided by one clear goal: providing a water supply people can count on. These improvements make a difference every single day, in every tap, home and throughout the community. By focusing on delivering a more reliable supply, we're helping to build a stronger, more resilient water service for the people in Cork City, for now and for generations to come."
In addition to laying new mains, crews will install new service connections from the public main in the roadway to customers' property boundaries and link them to individual supplies.
The project is being delivered by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected by July 2026.
To keep people safe and minimise inconvenience, traffic management, including temporary road closures, will be in place while works proceed. Access for local residents and emergency services will be maintained at all times.

The scheme forms part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationwide, tackling leaks can be complex and many are hidden, but progress is being made: national leakage has fallen from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
