Minister for Defence Helen McEntee TD officially opened the refurbished Block 4 accommodation building at the Naval Service Base on Haulbowline, Co. Cork.
Backed by investment of more than €8.8 million, the project provides living quarters for around 74 personnel, increasing the supply of single living‑in accommodation for enlisted members based on the island.
Minister for Defence Helen McEntee said: "With a record €83 million allocated this year for defence infrastructure, projects like Block 4 demonstrate our clear commitment to improving living conditions for Defence Forces personnel and delivering fit‑for‑purpose facilities across the State."
Block 4 had been unusable since it was damaged by fire in 2008. As a protected structure, it underwent careful refurbishment before construction works transformed a derelict, historically important building into a modern, fit‑for‑purpose accommodation block.
Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy said: "The delivery of new infrastructure, such as Block 4, marks a significant step forward in enhancing the living accommodation for the personnel of the Irish Defence Forces. Continued investment in modern, purpose-built facilities reflects our commitment to supporting those who serve, ensuring they have the highest standards of accommodation while carrying out their duties in Óglaigh na hÉireann".
The scheme was delivered by a collaborative design team comprising JCA Architects, Michael Barrett, Downes and JODA, with Cumnor Construction carrying out the build.
Investment in Haulbowline is being matched by work elsewhere in Cork. The Minister also visited Collins Barracks, where refurbishment of accommodation in Block 1 is currently under construction.
Officials said the progress reflects the Government's commitment to strengthening defence infrastructure. In recent years, spending has reached unprecedented levels; this year €83 million has been allocated for capital investment and property maintenance, the highest annual investment to date.
