Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has confirmed that a £250,000 carriageway resurfacing project at the A6 Castledawson Roundabout is scheduled to begin on Monday 18 May 2026. The investment also covers the resurfacing of a short section of the A54 Magherafelt Road.
Minister Kimmins said: "This is a substantial investment for the Castledawson and Magherafelt areas which will deliver significant benefits for road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to investing in and improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
The project has been scheduled to include both night-time and daytime sessions to manage the flow of traffic:
• Monday 18 May to Saturday 23 May: Night-time works from 7 pm to 6 am.
• Sunday 24 May: Daytime works from 6 am to 7 pm.
While the roundabout will be closed during these hours, Translink services at the Castledawson Park & Ride will remain operational during the night-time shifts. However, services at the Castledawson Park & Share will be suspended on Sunday 24 May between 6 am and 7 pm. Passengers are advised to use the Maghera or Toome Park & Ride sites during this time.
Signed diversionary routes will be in effect as follows:
• Northbound (A6 Dual toward Maghera/Derry): Diverted via B183 Hillhead Road, Knockloughrim Road, Hillhead Road, and Knockloughrim Link Road.
• Northbound (A6 Dual toward Magherafelt): Diverted via B183 Hillhead Road, B182 Hillhead Road, Blackpark Road, Creagh Road, and B18 Aughrim Road.
• Southbound (A6 Glenshane Road toward Belfast): Diverted via Knockloughrim Link Road, Hillhead Road, Knockloughrim Road, and B183 Hillhead Road.
• Magherafelt Area: Traffic heading toward Maghera should travel via Tobermore.
Additionally, the A54 Magherafelt Road will be closed at the roundabout on Monday 25 May between 9.30 am and 4.30 pm, with local diversions in place.
The Department for Infrastructure has designed the traffic management arrangements to reduce disruption, though road users are encouraged to allow extra travel time. The project is expected to be substantially complete by Monday 25 May 2026, depending on favourable weather conditions.
