Donegal County Council is set to deliver extensive safety enhancements and road reconstruction works on the N13 from Admiran Park to McClay's Corner, as well as along the N15 Main Street through Stranorlar and Ballybofey. The planned scheme will involve full road reconstruction and resurfacing, complemented by new traffic calming measures and raised pedestrian crossing points designed to protect all road users.

The project is financed through a €4.1 million funding allocation granted to Donegal County Council by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

Donegal County Council stated: "We are delighted to have secured the funding required to completely repair and resurface the N13/N15 through Stranorlar and Ballybofey. The proposed works will also incorporate significant Safety Improvement Works, which received Part 8 planning permission last year, including relocation and construction of raised pedestrian crossing points through the twin-towns."

Construction is currently scheduled to commence in late July. The initial phase of road reconstruction and safety works is projected to be substantially finished by the end of November. To support local businesses during the busy Christmas trading period, operations will pause throughout December and the opening weeks of January. Work will resume in the new year, with the second and final phase slated for completion by early spring 2027.

To mitigate the impact of the infrastructure project on pedestrians, motorists, and commercial enterprises within the twin towns, Donegal County Council has consulted with key stakeholders. These include the Ballybofey and Stranorlar Chamber of Commerce and the Elected Members of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District.

The upgrades will be executed in short, consecutive sections, with roughly 60% of the work programmed to take place outside normal business hours to limit traffic disruption and delays. Localised traffic and pedestrian management systems will be operational for each phase, which may necessitate brief road closures and diversions.

Once complete, the initiative will substantially restore the quality of the existing road surface and fundamentally improve safety provisions for pedestrians and vulnerable road users across both towns.
