Sinn Féin MP Cathal Mallaghan has welcomed a major new funding package aimed at improving water quality in the Lough Neagh catchment area.
The Mid Ulster MP was speaking after the announcement of new Shared Island funding that will support projects focused on restoring and protecting the environmental health of Lough Neagh and surrounding waterways.
The funding includes €33 million for a Lough Neagh Catchment Area Water Quality Programme, which is expected to run until 2031 and form part of a wider €56 million cross-border investment initiative focused on improving water quality.
Commenting on the announcement, Cathal Mallaghan said: "The allocation of €33 million towards a Lough Neagh Catchment Area Water Quality Programme is a very welcome step forward in addressing the serious environmental challenges facing the lough.
"Lough Neagh is a vital natural asset at the heart of our community.
"This programme, running to 2031, represents a significant step to restoring and improving conditions by reducing nutrient and sediment losses and restoring ecological habitats.
"It is particularly encouraging to see this funding as part of a wider €56 million joint investment in water quality, reflecting the importance of coordinated action across the island.
"This investment must now be matched by sustained delivery to ensure we safeguard Lough Neagh for future generations."
The funding initiative aims to address ongoing environmental concerns surrounding Lough Neagh, including water quality issues and ecological pressures affecting one of the island's most significant natural resources.
