Uisce Éireann is set to replace more than 1.5 kilometres of ageing watermains between Springmount Garden Centre and Ballyminaun Hill to curb leaks and bolster supply, with works beginning in late July and completion targeted for autumn 2026.

The Springmount scheme in Co Wexford will modernise part of the local network and reduce the risk of bursts that have caused supply interruptions and wasted treated drinking water.

As part of the project, crews will install new, durable pipes and fit new water service connections from the public mains in the roadway to the boundary of customers' properties before linking them to individual supplies.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD welcomed the project: "This watermain upgrade for Springmount is part of sustained investment to modernise the towns water infrastructure and will deliver positive outcome for the local community. The upgrade will ensure a robust and reliable water supply for the area, which local homes and businesses can rely on.

"It will also help to support local development and growth, by putting in place the right infrastructure for Wexford as a place to live and work.

"I commend Uisce Éireann on the rollout of these upgrade works and the progress being made to provide a more reliable water supply and reduce leakage in Wexford and right around the country."

Welcoming the works, Dave Murray of Uisce Éireann said the upgrades will help stop leakage and give communities in Springmount and nearby areas greater confidence in their water supply for years to come.

By focusing on delivering a more reliable supply, we're helping to build a stronger, more resilient water service for the people of Springmount, now and for generations to come."

Shareridge Ltd is delivering the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

To minimise disruption, a traffic management system will be in place during construction, with access for local and emergency vehicles maintained at all times. Uisce Éireann notes that with more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally — enough to circle the Earth one and a half times — identifying and fixing leaks is complex, but progress continues. National leakage is now at its lowest level, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today, supported by the National Leakage Reduction Programme.
