A non-statutory public consultation on Galway City Council's Draft Urban Design Vision for the Murrough Lands will open on Friday, 23 October 2026.
The draft sets out a long-term framework to redevelop 34 hectares on the city's eastern side into sustainable, well-connected neighbourhoods. It provides for up to 2,500 new homes alongside a proposed rail station, flood protection measures, play facilities, generous green spaces and community hubs.
Residents and stakeholders can share feedback at a "meet the design team" drop-in event on Thursday, 5 November 2026, at Atlantic Technological University (ATU), Old Dublin Road, Galway, H91 T8NW. Sessions run from 3.30pm to 5pm and 6.30pm to 8pm in the Café Foyer. Submissions can also be made online via the Galway City Council consultation portal at Consult.GalwayCity.ie/en/Browse.
The consultation period will close at 5pm on Monday, 23 November 2026. All relevant documents are available on the online portal.
The vision proposes significant housing delivery, identifying capacity for up to 2,500 dwellings to bolster the city's housing supply. It advances a transport-orientated approach with enhanced public transport and active travel links, including a new rail stop, the routing of the Galway-Dublin Greenway, and an expanded network of dedicated cycleways and footpaths.
Given the sensitive coastal setting, the plan prioritises climate resilience through an integrated flood defence strategy and a new linear coastal amenity. A substantial share of the land is earmarked for public recreation, with structured play areas, open green spaces and community facilities to serve future neighbourhoods.
How to make a submission: contributions may be lodged electronically through the consultation portal at Consult.GalwayCity.ie/en/Browse, or by post to Senior Planner, Planning Department, City Hall, College Road, Galway, H91X4K8. All submissions and observations must be received by 5pm on Monday, 23 November 2026. Late submissions will not be considered.
This consultation is being undertaken in line with Policy Objective 10.6.1 of the Galway City Development Plan 2023–2029 (as varied). The Draft Urban Design Vision has been prepared by Reddy Architecture and Urbanism.
