The Office of Public Works (OPW) has approved Kilkenny County Council’s application for support under its Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme, confirming funding for flood alleviation measures in Callan, County Kilkenny.
Under the scheme, the OPW has sanctioned additional funding of €82,782 (including VAT) to install a new pumping facility at Kcat Carpark and to decommission the existing pump. The works include a 900mm-diameter overflow pipe, three pumps (duty/standby and one diesel), a new pressure main and a barrier system to protect the yard area. On Bridge Street, the plan proposes installing a chamber and IPP for eight affected properties.
This approval brings the total funding for the project to €234,567.
Introduced in 2009, the OPW’s Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme provides funding to local authorities for small-scale flood mitigation works or studies where solutions can be identified and delivered quickly. To date, 21 funding applications from Kilkenny County Council have been supported under the scheme. Local authorities are responsible for delivering the works and must ensure they do not significantly increase flood risk elsewhere.
