The Office of Public Works (OPW) has approved Clare County Council’s application for funding under the OPW’s Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.
A total of €90,000 (including VAT) has been sanctioned for works at Carrowgower, Co. Clare. The project will deliver a new diesel-powered pump with float-operated controls and strengthen approximately 80 metres of the existing earthen embankment by installing gabion baskets at the toe.
Introduced in 2009, the scheme supports localised flood relief and coastal protection projects. To date, 45 applications from Clare County Council have been supported under the programme. See: www.floodinfo.ie/county-summary/
The scheme funds local authorities to carry out minor works or studies where a practical solution can be identified and delivered in a short timeframe. Works that are normally the responsibility of local authorities are generally not funded by the OPW, although partial funding may be considered where they also reduce flood risk to properties. Local authorities must be satisfied the works will not significantly increase flood risk elsewhere, and the timing and delivery of approved projects are a matter for each authority.
