Two of Dublin’s most famous hotels have closed today after 35 years of business.
Jurys Ballsbridge and the Berkely Court are due to close today at 4pm.
The site where both hotels are situated was bought by developer Seán Dunne’s Mountbrook Homes from the Jurys Doyle chain in 2005 for 380 million euro.
Almost 600 staff have accepted a redundancy offer of seven weeks’ pay per year of service from the Jurys Doyle Group, and the contents of the hotels, including beds, televisions and kitchen equipment will be auctioned off this Friday.
The Berkeley Court opened 1977, and the Jurys Ballsbridge in 1972. Dunne paid 260m euro for the 4.84 acre site housing Jurys, the Towers and the Berkeley Court apartments in 2005 and six months later paid 119m euro for the Berkeley Court hotel site.
It is understood Dunne had originally planned to build up to 32 apartments on the sites, however Dublin City Council recently rejected the plans.
