Mallusk-based ISL Waste Management has signed a contract with Ikea to help its new Belfast outlet reach a target of recycling 90 per cent of its waste.

With waste totalling an estimated 1,500 tonnes per year this will be one of the most ambitious recycling projects in Ireland.

ISL managing director Michael McLarnon said: "Winning this contract with Ikea is a significant sign that our can-do attitude, our constant innovation and our focus on setting ever higher service level targets are keeping us, as a local company, on the front line of the recycling and waste management industry."

The store which opens on Thursday has put in place many measures to show it takes environmental responsibility seriously.

Measures include a methane protection zone underneath the floor providing a 'clean air blanket', a rainwater harvesting system to supply water for lavatory flushing, a biomass system that will provide a wood pellet central heating system for the entire store and a customer recycling service.
