International Trade Key To Strong Economy: Paisley

Increased international trade is the key to a successful economy in Northern Ireland. That was the message from First Minister Ian Paisley to the Dublin Chamber of Commerce.

Speaking at the Chamber’s annual general meeting, Mr Paisley outlined ihis plans for creating a strong and prosperous economy.

The NI First Minister said: "Northern Ireland's future depends on developing its economy with business partners, partners who are located in Northern Ireland, the Irish Republic, the rest of the United Kingdom, as well as Europe and the United States of America, the British Commonwealth and other key countries of the world.

"I am dedicated to making Northern Ireland a better place to live, work, learn and invest by promoting and growing our economy. Only through promotion and growth can we deliver our Programme for Government.

"We must create high value added jobs and businesses and we must provide world class goods and services. Promoting the Economy will make a difference across Northern Ireland and will lead to improved public service," he said.

He also pointed out that considerable work on Northern Ireland’s new economic message had already taken place and was beginning to bear fruit, referring to the hosting of two important US economic missions to Northern Ireland since the restoration of devolved government. He said another two high-level missions are expected over the coming months.

The First Minister concluded by saying a strong economy in Northern Ireland could also have significant benefits for the Republic of Ireland: "Business between firms on both sides of the border continues to grow and market opportunities exist in both jurisdictions for our respective firms. I believe we can support each other to achieve our economic goals, what is good for our businesses can also be good for businesses in the Republic."
