A Cookstown Quarry has been fined £1,000 at Armagh Magistrates' Court today for making a discharge of process effluent into a waterway.
D Acheson (Navan Quarries) Ltd Cookstown was charged under Article 9 of the Water (Northern Ireland) Order 1999 of discharging effluent in excess of permitted levels.
On 10 November 2006, an Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) official found that an unnamed tributary of the Blackwater River was heavily contaminated with suspended solids.
Samples confirmed that the effluent from the Quarry was polluting, being approximately 294 times the permitted the limit set by EHS.
