There has been a 70% jump in the number of people seeking government help to pay their mortgage since January.
Figures released today suggest that 7,000 people are now receiving support from the Department of Social and Family Affairs.
Last December 4,000 people sought help.
Short-term relief is provided to struggling homeowners through a special Health Service Executive scheme.
The average weekly mortgage payments made under the scheme is over €90.
According to reports, the payment scheme cost the government €12m in 2007.
However, this is expected to grow to more than €30m by the end of next year.
The Money Advice and Budgeting Service says around one-quarter of people it assists have problems paying their mortgage.
