A £1.5m public realm scheme is to commence in Kilkeel later this year, it has been announced.
Regeneration Minister Margaret Ritchie confirmed funding for the project is now in place.
Ms Ritchie said: "I have been concerned about the condition of Kilkeel town centre for many years. This major scheme will bring about major changes to the public realm in the town centre, making it more attractive for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
"This major investment of £1.5m will target areas of the town centre that are currently perceived as unattractive and have the potential to act as a catalyst in reinvigorating the town centre."
Works will include the laying of underground cables, upgrading of footpaths, increased lighting and improved street furniture
Ms Ritchie said she hopes the scheme will encourage investment in the towns and contribute to the economy by improving trading conditions and attracting visitors to Kilkeel.
The work to design and implement the scheme will commence in April and finish in 2010 and will cover Newry Street, Newcastle Street, Bridge Street and Greencastle Street. Public consultation on the plans will take place early in the summer.
