A major water mains replacement project is set to get underway in the North Galway town of Dunmore next week, with Uisce Éireann crews scheduled to begin work on Church Street.
The project, which forms part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme, will see 251 metres of aging water mains replaced with new, modern pipes. Works are due to commence on Monday, 10 November, and are expected to be completed in early 2026.
According to Uisce Éireann, the upgrades will improve the quality and reliability of drinking water for residents and businesses in Church Street and the wider Dunmore area. The new infrastructure will also help prevent leaks, bursts, and other operational issues, ensuring a more secure water supply for the local community.
To minimise disruption, construction will take place overnight between 7pm and 6am. A temporary road closure will be in place on Church Street (N83) during these hours, with Galway County Council granting permission for the closure from Monday, 10 November, until Friday, 12 December. The road will reopen each morning at 6am to accommodate daytime traffic, including HGVs, with local and emergency access maintained at all times.
Diversions will be signposted in both directions. Outbound traffic will be diverted via the R360 (Sion Hill) to its junction with the R327 at Pollredmond, then back via the R327 to Cloonfad. Inbound traffic from the Cloonfad side will follow the same route in reverse.
Enda Mac Namara, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, said: "We're delighted to be breaking ground on this significant programme of mains replacements in Dunmore. Once complete, these upgrades will provide an improved supply of drinking water for customers in the area while also reducing the risk of operational disturbances on the network in the future."
The works will be carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
