Uisce Éireann is progressing essential water network upgrades in Carlow to support local growth and development while delivering a more robust and reliable water supply for residents and businesses.
Delivered as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme, the project involves replacing approximately 1.8km of problematic watermains with modern pipes. The existing infrastructure has been prone to bursts and leaks, leading to treated drinking water losses and frequent supply interruptions. Upgrading these pipes will address these issues, reduce water loss, and improve the overall performance of the local network.
The infrastructure upgrades will also increase network capacity, ensuring the water supply can comfortably meet future demand and support ongoing development in the area.
Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, welcomed the project and highlighted its long-term benefits: "We are committed to providing customers in Carlow with a water supply they can rely on. Every section of watermain we replace helps to reduce leakage, improve water quality and strengthen the network for homes and businesses.
"These upgrades will make a real difference day-to-day, helping to build a more resilient water supply for the community into the future."
The works are scheduled to take place along:
- Blackbog Road
- The R448 (a main access route to South East Technological University)
- Green Road
Construction will commence in June 2026. The project is being delivered by Shareridge Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected this autumn.
This project is part of Uisce Éireann's ongoing national campaign to address leaks across more than 65,000 km of underground pipes. National leakage has dropped to its lowest level ever, falling from 49% in 2014 to 36%.
