Uisce Éireann is starting a major upgrade of ageing water mains on Rhebogue Road and Lower Park Road in Limerick City to improve reliability and reduce leaks.
Works getting under way next week will see more than 1.8 kilometres of new, modern water pipes installed to strengthen the local network and cut down on unplanned outages affecting homes and businesses.
The existing mains have been susceptible to bursts and leakage, causing service interruptions and the unnecessary loss of treated drinking water.
Speaking about the project, Brian McCarthy of Uisce Éireann said: "Every pipe we replace is guided by one clear goal: providing a water supply people can count on. These improvements make a difference every single day, in every tap, home and throughout the community. By focusing on delivering a more reliable supply, we're helping to build a stronger, more resilient water service for the people of Glasheen now and for generations to come."
As part of the scheme, new water service connections will be installed from the public main in the road to customers' property boundaries and tied into individual supplies.
Ward and Burke Construction Ltd will deliver the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected by December 2026.
This scheme forms part of Uisce Éireann's ongoing National Leakage Reduction Programme. Managing more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationwide is complex and many leaks are hidden, but national leakage has fallen to its lowest level on record, down from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
