Uisce Éireann has completed a significant upgrade to Carrick-On-Shannon's water network, replacing almost 1km of ageing mains to cut leakage, enhance water quality and improve reliability for homes and businesses.
Delivered under Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme, the project involved renewing water mains along the L3412 between Castlecara Road and Summerhill, and from the N4 Attifinlay Roundabout to the Castlecara Road Roundabout.
The investment is expected to reduce bursts, improve water quality and strengthen the resilience of the local supply, providing long-term benefits for the community in County Leitrim.
Patricia Lowry, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: "We are delighted to have completed these important upgrades in Carrick-on-Shannon. By replacing ageing infrastructure, we have strengthened the local water network and delivered long-term benefits for customers through reduced leakage, improved reliability and enhanced water quality. We would like to thank the local community for their patience and cooperation while these works were carried out."
Finola Armstrong-McGuire, President of Carrick-on-Shannon Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the completion of the project, saying: "We welcome Uisce Éireann's continued investment in Carrick-on-Shannon and the completion of these important upgrades. Reliable water infrastructure is essential for supporting local businesses and ensuring our town continues to thrive. Improvements like these help ensure that Carrick-on-Shannon remains an attractive place to live, work and do business, and we appreciate the commitment to strengthening services for our community."
The works were delivered on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans Construction and form part of the utility's ongoing investment in Ireland's water infrastructure.
Uisce Éireann said the Leitrim scheme is one of many targeting leaks across more than 65,000 km of underground water mains nationwide. National leakage is now at its lowest recorded level, down from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
Further details are available via Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme. The utility is responsible for public drinking water and wastewater services and is committed to upgrading critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth, provide safe drinking water and enhance the environment.
