Uisce Éireann has secured planning permission for a significant upgrade to Askeaton's wastewater infrastructure in west Limerick, marking a key milestone for the project.
The upgrade will boost treatment capacity to accommodate new housing and future development, deliver more sustainable wastewater treatment, and help protect the local environment.
The programme includes a new wastewater treatment plant and a new wastewater pumping station at Abbey View, along with additional stormwater storage and upgrades to the wider wastewater network. Existing infrastructure at Abbey View and Lismakeera will be replaced or decommissioned as part of the works.
Angus Hall, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, said: "Receiving planning permission is an important milestone for this essential project and brings us another step closer to delivering the wastewater infrastructure Askeaton needs for the future. This upgrade will support existing and future development, while delivering more efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment and protecting the local environment. We are progressing procurement and look forward to construction next year."
Subject to procurement and governance processes, construction is expected to get under way in the second half of 2027.
Uisce Éireann, which provides public drinking water and wastewater services across Ireland, says it remains committed to upgrading critical infrastructure to enable sustainable growth, ensure safe drinking water, and enhance the environment.
