Bord Gáis Energy Supply has urged customers to take advantage of the summer months to reduce their long-term household carbon footprint by getting their natural gas boiler serviced.

Most of the average household’s CO2 emissions come from central heating boilers. With each household in Ireland creating approximately eight tonnes of carbon dioxide a year (source Sustainable Energy Ireland), double the carbon dioxide emissions produced by an average car, servicing the central heating boiler annually can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the entire household.

Carbon deposits and debris can build-up over time in a gas boiler, resulting in the significant reduction of the operating efficiency of the boiler which means increased consumption of gas and higher bills for the householder. Part of the central heating boiler service involves the removal of the carbon build-up and debris, which significantly improves the efficiency of gas consumption.

Bord Gáis Energy Supply and boiler service manufacturers recommend having your gas boiler serviced during these months as gas bills are usually lower and customers can put the cost of a service ionto their next gas bill.

A gas boiler, which has been serviced during the summer months, is also far less likely to breakdown during the colder winter months when householders rely on their boilers most.

"Most people are realising the financial and environmental benefits of an efficient boiler," Joyce Coleman, Appliance Servicing Manager for Bord Gáis Energy Supply, said. "Our customer care centre is always very busy with boiler service requests during the winter months as people start to use their heating systems after a long summer break.

"This means that booking times are not as flexible in the winter months, resulting in our customers having to wait a few days to have their boiler serviced. To avoid waiting times for a boiler service we urge customers to book a service with us during the quieter summer months."
