Council Reports Progress On Dublin Estate Regeneration

Eight contractors from a shortlist of over 40 have collected detailed drawings and documents from Dublin City Council with a view to tendering to build Phase 1a of the St. Michael's Estate Regeneration scheme.

This phase consists of 75 residential units along with a Housing Management Estate Office and 150 square metres of community crèche, playground and landscaped courtyard.

The successful tenderer is expected to go on site by autumn 2010, with construction works expected to take up to two years to complete.

Peter Ayton, Executive Manager with Dublin City Council's Housing and Regeneration Services, said: "The collapse of the St Michael’s Estate Public Private Partnership project in autumn 2008 presented a challenge to Dublin City Council to develop new proposals to achieve the regeneration of the Estate within current financial constraints. In response, the Council established an Urban Regeneration Task Force and with the help and support of the local community through the St Michael’s Estate Regeneration Board.

"The Council has salvaged a considerable amount of the original project and is now starting to provide some of the promised housing itself."

Mr Ayton said the eight contractors collecting information from the Council was an indication of the progress made on the project.

The Urban Regeneration Taskforce is also working on designs for O’Devaney Garden and Dominick Street in the city, while a review has been set up to look into the options for St Teresa’s Gardens, Dolphin House and Croke Villas.
