Boil Water Notice For Ballymacarbry Supply As Turbidity Rises

Construction News Image

Around 672 customers on the Ballymacarbry Public Water Supply have been told to boil tap water after a deterioration in raw water quality led to elevated turbidity at the Ballymacarbry Upper Water Treatment Plant.

Uisce Éireann has issued a Boil Water Notice, effective 15 July 2026, as a precaution to protect public health. The issue has been linked to low water levels in the borehole combined with increased demand.

Customers in Ballymacarbry, Castlereagh, Knockalisheen, Nire and surrounding areas are affected. Those wishing to confirm if their property is included can visit the Water Quality section of water.ie and enter their Eircode, or call Uisce Éireann’s 24/7 customer care team on 1800 278 278. A map of the impacted area is available online via the Supply and Service Updates page.

Drinking water specialists at Uisce Éireann are working to resolve the turbidity problem and lift the notice as soon and as safely as possible, in consultation with the HSE.

Uisce Éireann's Maura Phelan acknowledged the disruption and said: "Public health is our number one priority and this notice has been put in place to protect customers.

"We recognise the inconvenience this will cause for customers, families, businesses and the wider community, and we apologise for that disruption.

"Our drinking water experts are working to resolve the issue and restore normal drinking water quality standards as quickly and as safely as possible. We will continue to keep customers and local stakeholders informed as the situation progresses."

Uisce Éireann noted that its drinking water standards under EU Drinking Water Regulations are stringent and include wide safety margins. When risks are identified through enhanced testing and monitoring, the HSE is consulted and Boil Water Notices are issued to safeguard public health. Immediate actions are then taken to address the cause and remove the notice once it is safe to do so, with HSE agreement.

Vulnerable customers registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct updates. The utility reminds customers that water is safe to drink once it has been boiled.
