James Larkin Road has reopened to traffic as Uisce Éireann advances the North City Arterial Main, a project to deliver a stronger and more reliable drinking water supply for homes and businesses across north Dublin.
The scheme is designed to reduce the risk of supply interruptions for 160,000 properties across the Dublin region. The €25 million investment involves installing 5.5km of new high-pressure trunk water main to reinforce the network in north Dublin city. By linking into the existing arterial system, the pipeline will provide a more robust and direct route from reservoir to tap.
Reopening James Larkin Road marks a key milestone, with more than 1.9km of the new main laid to date.
The upgrade forms part of ongoing investment in water services across the Greater Dublin Area. Much of the network was originally built to serve around 500,000 people but now supports approximately 2 million, underlining the need to futureproof ageing infrastructure and ensure dependable supplies for a growing population.
Uisce Éireann's Jessica Dale said: "We're pleased to be reaching this milestone and reopening the James Larkin Road as works continue to progress across the project. This investment will help strengthen north Dublin's water network and provide a more secure and reliable drinking water supply for local homes and businesses for many years to come.
"We understand these works can be disruptive, and we'd like to thank the local community for their patience and cooperation to date. Every section completed brings us another step closer to delivering the long-term benefits this critical infrastructure project will provide."
While James Larkin Road has reopened, works continue on Thornville Road and Greendale Road, scheduled during the summer holidays to minimise disruption for local families and schools. Short weekend works will also take place on Kilbarrack Road to facilitate pipe installation. Construction has progressed to the junction of James Larkin Road, Howth Road and Greendale Road and will move north along Howth Road and Dublin Road towards Bayside Boulevard in the coming months.
There will be no further lane closures for the remainder of the project. Traffic management will operate via a stop/go system as works move through the remaining phases. Access for residents, businesses and emergency services will be maintained throughout. Further details are available on the NCAM project page.
